Block 13 Scrap Stars

I made this into half of a Lemoyne star because I wanted the 4 star points to pop, and also because after trying out a number of fabrics, I didn’t find one for the other 4 that just  had that wow factor.  Other than a couple of bobbles, I like the way it turned out for the latest Slended Sampler.   This block was designed by Corie Yoder.

I decided this would be the time to master the paper piecing technique.  My first attempt didn’t go as planned.  I was just going to paper piece the inner portion of the star; I knew I could handle the rest in my typical fashion.

Take 2 –

2016-03-28 11.10.06I got farther in the process this time and then remembered the hard way how I always mess this up.  I should sew 1/4″ past each line instead of stopping on it.  I had been stopping in the center each time and as a result, that last piece was never going to fit in there.

Hmm….well that didn’t work!  Third time was the charm though and I got it piece correctly, although there was still some room for improvement.  It was easy from here on out.

I used my Accuquilt Go to cut 1.5″ or 2.5″ strips for everything on this block. I was able to cut out the pieces more accurately and quickly.  I still need to trim the fabric behind the 4 corner triangles but other than that, I’m done.

I’m not entirely satisfied with 2 spots on here, but the nice thing about 6″ blocks is it gets lost in the noise when I put it up against all the blocks completed so far.

Love your colors! I’ve been following the Splendid Sampler since it started. First I couldn’t decide on the colors, but now I am making a quilt for Mother’s Day. Sorry but Mom comes first. It’s a log cabin variation, done in mitered blocks. Weird, but I like it. I may do some of the SS blocks, but I don’t think I’ll be doing all 100.

  2. I like the colours. They remind me of my Dear Jane quilt fabric choices.
I am still working on this block. I decided to English paper piece it. I still haven’t decided which fabrics to use on the border bits, but I might have the middle star section sewn by the end of today.

  3. Thanks for sharing your paper piecing challenges. I have been quilting for over 15 years and asking me to paper piece is like asking me to do neurosurgery (with my eyes closed).

Looks great. I gave up on Splendid Sampler. The crochet pushed me over the edge. LOL.

    1. I understand! That one was the toughest one for me.
