more paper piecing

Something tells me I’m just getting started with the idea of paper piecing and English paper piecing.  Carolyn McCormick created and sells the handiest ruler called “Add A Quarter” like in the photo above.  I have one, except mine is pink!  She does some phenomenal quilts out of paper piecing – some with blocks as small as 4 inches.  Yikes!

Speaking of EPP, I didn’t get through all of this on the plane but I did have a really interesting conversation instead.  A woman who was 2016-04-04 08.32.05on the same flight as me on Sunday sat down next to me before the flight was leaving and asked what I was working on.  It turns out she’s an engineer, so she’s wired to try to figure out how things work.  She sewed when she was younger but not in recent years.

Mid-flight, I had the idea that I could package up some hexies, thread, needle and scissors and give it to her so she could try it on her own at a later time.  We were getting our bags back and just as I reached in my purse to give it to her, she was gone.  She had a connecting flight to make and she disappeared before I saw where she went. Darn it!  I was just on the verge of  introducing a new quilter into the circle and I missed my chance!

That’s some nice EPP – nice travel companion story too. I started a Halloween theme hexagon EPP a long time ago – I’m inspired to get it out and work on it.

    1. Thanks! I bought a kit for that one and finished the block, so if I want to do more, I’ll need to find some fabrics that have an interesting pattern for the middle pieces.

Lovely block! I am a big fan of English paper piecing.

    1. Thank you! A friend of mine who sews a lot was showing me some of what she’s been working on recently and she just sewed her first hexie flower. She said she’s also branching out to try new things.

I’m working on a massive tumbling block quilt. Enjoying the process.

        1. I keep ending up working on large quilts. My next one after this is for a twin and I’m looking forward to the smaller size for a change of pace.

This piece is so awesome! That fussy cutting just takes it to a whole new level! And you’re so thoughtful to think about giving the engineer some hexies…it probably would have never crossed my brain. And speaking of THOUGHTFUL…..your gift of the rulers last night was above and beyond. Thank you Barbara!!!

    1. Thank you! I was so inspired to see your own projects with English paper piecing so you get all the credit for getting me interested. The least I could do is repay the favor with a small token.
