We’re in the last 3 months of the year and that means any quilts I might make for Christmas presents needs to be started. I can work under a tight deadline, but I prefer not to.
I had a request to make one of my nephews a quilt but what my family didn’t know was I had plans to make 2 other young boys in the family each a Star Wars quilt. If I’m going to knock out 3 more quilts in 2 1/2 months, they’re going to not be as time-consuming as the last one (which I loved making). Enter my 12″ Accuquilt Qube. It includes 8 different dies:
- GO! Square-6 1/2″ (6″ Finished)
- GO! Square-3 1/2″ (3″ Finished)
- GO! Half Square Triangle-6″ Finished Square
- GO! Quarter Square Triangle-6″ Finished Square
- GO! Half Square triangle-3″ Finished Square
- GO! Square on Point-4 3/4″ (4 1/4″ Finished)
- GO! Parallelogram 45°-3 11/16″ x 4 15/16″ (3″ x 4 1/4″ Finished)
- GO! Rectangle-3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ (3″ x 6″ Finished)
I used the 6″ block for the large squares, 3″ for the cornerstones, and 3″ x 6″ for the sashing. I spent literally a couple of evenings this week sewing a side sash to each large block and then a coordinating bottom sash to cornerstone. I’m now joining the blocks 2 by 2 (I just pinned the blocks to the wall for the photo). I’ll have 2 quilt tops finished this weekend and the only way I could make that happen was to not spend a lot of time cutting and also by picking an easy pattern.
I also bought the fabric today for the 3rd quilt. I knew when I saw this pattern I wanted to make it, so I suggested to my nephew this one for him. He said he was happy to get a quilt of any kind and left the details up to me. Cool! The designer for this pattern is Libs Elliott and if you like offbeat geometric patterns, she can’t be beat. I’m using Moda’s flannel fabrics that include stripes, plaids and solids in off-white, 6 varieties of blue and 6 varieties of grey/black. I’ll start cutting this one out when I’m finished with the other 2.

Oh that reminds me that I forgot to order more of the grunge fabric today. Gotta go do that now while I’m thinking of it!

I get stressed out if I’m not ahead of schedule. I’m already mentally planning out a quilt I’ll be giving as a gift to a graduate next June. But I haven’t bought any fabric for that one yet – haha!
I don’t envy your goals before christmas. I do like the star wars quilt you have pictured. This quilt pattern and your choice of fabrics, gives the quilt top nice movement.

Yes, I have to admit that the cutting portion isn’t my favorite part; I’m always anxious to start sewing so this helps speed up the cutting part. I’m also not an accurate rotary cutter which is really why I use it.

It keeps me out of trouble! I also went on a 5 mile walk with my husband, swam for a couple of hours, went shopping and to a movie – and took a nap – haha!
