Block 76 – Little Things

20161107_140808.jpgThe saying “go big or go home” accurately describes this block.  The applique went fine – nothing too earth shaking there.  Making the quarter square triangles was surprisingly easy.  But then – it was time to trim them down.

Oh wait – I have a better quote.  “All good things must come to an end”.  I was carefully following the 45 degree angle line on my ruler to trim up the sides but what I failed to notice was I didn’t have the middle cross hatch centered at 1″, which I needed to hit the midway point of a 2″ square.  There’s a block in here that’s really wonky.  But the good news is the fabric I used in here is pretty busy so I don’t think in the end it’s as obvious as I thought it was going to be. Whew!

20161107_170713.jpgI try to stay moderately organized since I typically have multiple projects going on at once.  I have these cloth boxes to hold each project – nothing fancy; they’re available at Target, Lowe’s, etc.  I just like the size of them.  The rule is 1 box per project.  And back in February, I had 1 box for the Splendid Sampler.  We’re 76 blocks into 100 of them so I should be nearing the bottom of my box or at least be three quarters of the way through, right?

Of course not!  My stash has literally doubled!  When I realized it was overflowing, I figured out that there was a big mess of a bunch of tiny pieces in there mingled in a bunch of untouched layer cakes, fat quarters, etc.  So now my second box has the big pieces and when I need tiny pieces, I just go to the other box.  No more buying any more fabric for this sampler!

    Lovely block.

    1. Thank you!

  3. Sweet block! Also good idea to evaluate your scrap stash! You will save some money from buying more fabric (though of course we know how much fun buying more fabric lol)

    1. Our foursome met at my house Friday to go to the quilt show, and one of the women was shocked to see how small my stash it. I told her I had more hiding under the table – haha! But I definitely don’t have anywhere near the amount that a lot of my friends have, that’s for sure.
