Oops; my completed blocks to posts are out of order. I try not to cram too much into any single post so I’ll save my spool of thread for tomorrow or so. This is yesterday’s block by Elizabeth Dackson. Once again I’m looking at a picture of a block that I did not iron before I took the picture….! I used my Accuquilt Go to cut out all the 2 1/2″ squares as well as the half square triangles for the other 4 pieces so I know this one really is straight – even if it doesn’t look like it!
I bought Elizabeth’s book – Quilter’s Paper-Piecing Workbook – and if you like paper piecing or maybe haven’t tried it and are looking for a good book to describe how to do it, I would definitely recommend her book. She explains things clearly and succinctly and it has quite a number of projects in it.
In the meantime, looks like I need to re-work this other Splendid Sampler block. I thought it said 2 5/8″ for the pieces that go with the flying geese but it said 2 3/8″. The short story is it made them too long and too wide. Those points will never fly! I tried to correct it along the way but that didn’t work. I can salvage the middle square and maybe the outside corners on this block, but I’ll need to re-work those flying geese or it’ll drive me crazy to look at that mess!

Easy mistake to make: I hope you’ve got enough fabric to rework it.
I haven’t reworked it yet, but there are a couple of pieces – the star points – that I’ll need to switch colors.
I totally understand the “rework” thing!!! Forever you would “grrrrrrr” when you look at it and it isn’t worth it!!!!!! Love the block(s)!!!!!!
I remember when I switched to more expensive thread, thinking “well now I can’t mess up because that’ll cost more money”. But it’s just part of the process.
It certainly is an interesting journey. I have somewhat settled in to a set of “what works” and am pleased with the outcomes so, until something comes along that would be a huge prod to explore, I “motor” along! LOL!

The nice thing is she has quite a few patterns in there, and she starts with the easy one and works your way up. You can create something really cool with the first one.

You give me hope! I love that you would post your mistakes so I know I’m not the only one who occasionally misreads a pattern or messes it up in some way. You do lovely work so thanks for letting us see the warts.
You are definitely not alone! I was quilting the second Star Wars quilt today and found a section about an inch or two long where I didn’t sew 2 blocks together. Fortunately that was an easy one to hide but the reality is…I have mistakes or at least areas for improvement in every quilt.
I’ll have to look up Elizabeth’s book,I love to paper piece.
I wish I were better at designing my own blocks; Elizabeth has a great sense of style with her blocks.
Ah, I feel your flying geese pain….Do you have enough fabric to redo?
Sadly…I think I’ll be re-working that part of the block with different fabric but the good news is I have some that’s pretty close.
