Just Like Heaven

20161128_193108.jpgHot off the press – I just finished the hand binding on this quilt.  It’s in the washing machine and I’ll need to trim threads after it’s out but otherwise it’s ready to go in the mail to my nephew.  The pattern is called Just Like Heaven from Libs Elliott.  I knew when I originally saw it that I would end up making it and was just waiting for the right opportunity.

My official “quilt holder for the photo” isn’t home this evening so I just draped it over a chair to get a couple of pictures.  The original quilt pattern finished out at 64″ x 64″.  I wanted to make this a little larger because my nephew is 6 feet tall, give or take. Also she uses all solids in hers but I mixed mine up with the same blue/grey/black colors but several had patterns in them as you can probably see.

20161128_193108.jpgLibs uses 8″ blocks in her pattern so instead, I dropped down to 6″ squares and then instead of it being 8 x 8 rows/columns I made it 12 x 12.  I kept her original pattern intact in the middle and then added 2 rows on the top, bottom, left and right so that I didn’t lose her original vision.  In doing so, I added a few variations on the additional blocks.  This was the 3rd quilt I finished on the Avante.  Her quilt has straight lines quilted on it.  I haven’t added a ruler base to my machine yet and wasn’t sure I could do the straight lines justice so I went in search of a pattern that I liked.  I eventually went with an all over design that basically stitches out “C” over and over.  His last name starts with C and I think that just appealed to me!

And with that, my 3 quilts for Christmas presents are done other than trimming a few threads.  Whew! That means I can relax and not stress next month about deadlines.

    1. Thank you!

  2. What an amazing quilt! I can do strip quilting, but have never tried anything as intricate as this. Great job!

    1. Thank you so much! These are all half square triangles which requires a little more piecing than strip quilts but I’m sure you could do it!

  3. I have this pattern, but haven’t pulled fabric yet. And I also have a nephew who’s 6-feet tall. I need to make his a graduation quilt for next year and not sure what to make yet. Congrats on a great finish. Thanks for linking up with TGIFF hosted @ Anja Quilts.

This quilt is so pretty. I find it amazing how a color placement can change a pattern’s look. Another idea to store away for the future. 🙂

    1. Thank you! It was a challenge to sew with the thicker flannel but it’s a very comfy quilt.

    1. I live by the motto “if you’re on time, you’re late!” whenever I can.

Were you a 4-H member? That’s what I always heard…if you are early, you are on time, if you are on time, you are late, and I’d you are late, you are left!

        1. Oh my gosh, that’s great! I was in 4-H. I actually learned it in college from a professor that I really liked. And he was right!
