Craftsy BOM block 1

craftsy-2017-bom-block-1One designer I like in particular is Nancy McNally.  If you remember the purple star quilt I made last year that was paper pieced and on the cover of Fons & Porter magazine (I think in May), she designed that one.  So when I saw a quilt she designed was voted to be the Craftsy block of the month quilt, I signed up for it.  I went ahead and bought the kit this time even though I’m typically not a kit person.  I liked the solids which

cutting-yardageI liked the solids which, is a change since I very nearly always use something with a pattern in it.  Kits make me nervous because if someone didn’t cut the fabric correctly, or worse if I cut it incorrectly…well there’s gonna be an issue.  And so I did on the very first cut.  I cut it 1/4″ short for WOF.  Oops.  Hopefully it will be fine and I won’t do that again.

I don’t know how anyone else navigates cutting strips when they have yards and yards of fabric.  I weigh down the fabric so that it doesn’t shift and then start cutting.  If you can’t tell, I’m left-handed!

aurifil-spoolI was working on the border blocks next and since it’s made up of blue fabric, I pulled out one of the new spools I got for Christmas.  The way you’re supposed to get to the thread at the end of the spool is to untwist the bottom and the thread is tucked in under there.  Except sometimes it’s not.  I never did find the end of this spool of thread!  After 15 minutes of fiddling with it, I finally gave up and just cut it loose.  That was driving me nuts!

If you’re interested in seeing the finished product or making the quilt yourself, you can find it at Craftsy’s website here.  The pattern uses several templates, rotary cutting, etc. but no paper piecing this time around.  Nice and easy!

I feel your pain, I’ve had a rash of those lately, drives me nuts, but this quilt really is beautiful,do you have plans for it?

    1. I don’t have immediate plans for this quilt. I keep thinking it would be nice to have one or two on hand in case a last minute gift to someone special is needed. So far I keep giving away nearly every one I’ve made so maybe this one will finally be on my “TBD” list.

Never bought a kit before. Look forward to seeing your finished project!

    1. This one is a monthly block plan, going through June. I have the instructions for all the months so I may get it done before then but I’m not in a big hurry.

I was tempted to get this kit… but I have way to much to do already .. so I will enjoy watching you make yours!😄

    1. I have too many already too! Part of me said “why did you sign up for another quilt?” – haha!

  4. Thanks for the tip on putting a weight on the fabric. I am also left handed….creates all kinds of fun when using rulers!

    1. Now you have me wondering….do right handed people not have this problem? Hmmm….

      1. Good question! Hmmmm let’s see what we hear from our followers!

        1. I just remembered that I meant to include that in a post. Hopefully I’ll remember that tomorrow!

  5. Love the colors and the design.
