border half finished

20170113181913_img_0508.jpgI made more headway on the Craftsy block of the month.  The border is actually the same blocks as the ones lined out for January, although it doesn’t immediately look like it.  I’m always amazed at just how much variety there is with half square triangles!

The border is made from blocks that I don’t have in dies and in fact they don’t make, so short of buying custom made dies – which aren’t cheap and also take time to have made and shipped to me – I rotary cut the pieces for it.   The quilt will be square so I pinned up 2 of the 4 strips that I finished today.

20170113172231_img_0502.jpgI’m sneaking in quilting time each day in the meantime.  There’s a fair amount of detail in it – I wanted to make the magenta and dark purple really pop so I decided to quilt the neutral portions and then do a stitch in the ditch around most of the individual units.

I’m not sure how this is going to look once it’s done but at least I’m getting in lots of practice!  The quilt is 29 rows plus top and bottom borders. I’ve been quilting 2 rows at a time but it’s still going to take a while.  I didn’t originally plan to quilt the light purples but I accidentally did on the first row so now that’s part of the design!

Interesting quilting going on there and I’m sure it will be lovely when finished. I made a ribbon quilt one time but never thought to use the ribbon look for borders. I like it and will want to try that sometime for a quilt border. Keep up the good work.

    1. There are several good blocks in here that I think would look good as border blocks as well.
