This lap sized quilt has had as many twists and turns as the pattern has in it. My original plans, months ago, were to make this for a completely different occasion and individual. While I was buying the fabric, another woman mentioned that she had made the storm at sea version that uses snail’s trail in it. That got my thinking cap going and I started making the initial blocks and then bought some coordinating fabric for the rest of that pattern.
Except then I didn’t care for the other fabric I bought and the blocks just languished. In the meantime, I realized I waned to give the original recipient an entirely different, non-quilt gift so I really had no reason to hurry.
I don’t know what inspired me, other than I keep a list of pending projects, but I picked this one up a couple of weeks ago and finished out 25 blocks; I think I had half them done prior to that. Almost like magic, our son received an invitation to a birthday party and not just anyone’s birthday party but the son of our friend who works for Quilts, Inc. This would be perfect (well, along with a gift card or something like that). By Monday of last week I had all the blocks pieced together, having entirely given up on storm at sea by this point. But the variation in fabrics is because storm at sea normally has a flow of colors in it. I even had the flange binding ready to go after quilting.
I had a family emergency and for the first time in a while, I went not just a day without quilting but almost a week. The party came and went and there was no quilt ready to be given. I still finished it and it’s ready to go, other than shoring up the corners. It turns out flange binding and mitered corners aren’t as easy as I thought they would be due to extra bulk. I took a chance with a white border; if I make this again I’ll definitely skip that because it just looks “off” to me, as if the sides are half finished. Every quilt, every time, is a learning process in one or more ways!

There are 2 variations of storm at sea. One has the snail’s trail in it and the easier version doesn’t. Both are beautiful and typically very vivid!
That pattern is on my list. Are things in Texas OK these days?
It’s finally settled down. It’s been an emotional couple of weeks but moving on and I was busy all day today which helped. I’m about to go check out your blog and see what I missed!

I like this one and I’ve never made one but may do it in blues now that I’ve seen yours. I have a HUGE stack of blue fabric that needs to be used. I learned to make the flange binding and find it very easy. Have you watched the Missouri Star tutorial on You Tube of flange binding? That is how I learned. Keep up the good work!
This would be beautiful in blue! I have the most of neutrals but blues are a very close second. I’m not sure how I ended up with so much blue that I haven’t made into anything.
