My niece, who’s turning 30 in 2 months, asked me back at Christmas time if I would make her a purple quilt for her birthday. I’m just about “purpled out” after making 4 quilts in the past 12-15 months where that’s a prominent color, but I was flattered that she asked so I’m making it. This is a fun quilt pattern called Labyrinth by Debbie Maddy. My only regret is not making the pieces 1/4″ larger than her pattern calls for – I’m using a rotary cutter and following the pattern; if I had just made it a little larger, I actually had the Accuquilt dies to cut the entire thing out. I’m just getting started but this is the middle of the quilt.
And…the teacher loved the mini quilt! She sent me an email with the following –
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!
I bounced around the room, ran out in the hallway and showed it off to EVERYONE!!!!
I cannot express how important this quilt is to me. It says so much to me. The time it took to discuss, plan, create. WOW. And I know your son had a huge part in this. WOW. My heart is bursting!!!!!!

That was pretty awesome to get that email this morning! It turns out some other teachers wanted to know if I could make one for their room also, but I really do need to get this birthday quilt done since I have a real deadline on this one, and then I promised another friend that I would make one for her. If I can get through both of those before the end of the school year, then I will definitely try making a couple more!

Yes, it’s violet (oops; I started to write violent!) and a darker purple. It’s really supposed to have 3 shades of each fabric but I took the easy way out.

I agree with Meg’s reply. You can always make a cushion from this block and go with the Accuquilt. It is a pretty block and the colors are great. I love quilts with stars. Also, I KNEW the teacher would love her wall quilt and the requests would be forthcoming. Isn’t it great for someone to show appreciation and joy at getting an unexpected gift?

Aww that’s so sweet! I’d also go for easier sizing. Cutting takes so much time/energy! But this new quilt pattern looks lovely.
The block looks great, and very precisely cut. But I know if it were me, I would probably dump this piece (save for later) and cut all the new pieces larger on the accuquilt cutter. I suspect It will save time in the long run and possibly give you a more satisfactory result.
