I won’t bore anyone with the gazillion photos I’ve taken of this layout so far. When I picked colors initially, I started with the largest triangles – 8″ across the bottom – and then alternated colors. First a red, then a green, then a pink, then a blue, etc. This pattern calls for 10 fat quarters but I think I used 13. I continued with the medium triangles – 7″ across – and when I ran out of new fabric choices, I started with the first one I had used for the large triangles and so forth.
I knew it would take a little more effort on the layout. I would move one block to a different spot and take a photo then evaluate. I’d spot another one that needed to move, take a photo and evaluate again. I’m going to sleep on this one but right now I’m happy with it. The sun is long gone so tomorrow might bring another chance but I think I’m close.
This pattern is from Abbey Lane Quilts. I bought mine in my LQS; they do also sell digital patterns online and their patterns are very clear, concise and easy to follow.
I didn’t really sew all weekend; I was also getting a child off to college. That meant picking up some last minute items – toothpaste and shampoo, and also ingredients to make some chocolate chip cookies because nothing says college like homemade cookies from Mom, right? Dorms today are nothing like when I went to college decades ago. This is basically a 2 bedroom apartment. 2 people per unit that includes a living room, kitchenette, full bathroom with individual sinks and separate bedrooms. There’s a full dresser on the left and a computer desk; an armoire to the right of this picture; the bed can be raised to 36″ off the floor for extra storage underneath. Oh, and a quilt on the bed that I made to top it off – haha!

Thanks! I’ve decided that maybe since it’s not 100% red and green, maybe it could be used to stretch the season a little longer. Or something like that!
I like the mix on the triangle quilt, and nothing says mom love you more than a homemade quilt on your bed. I offered one to my youngest before she left for school….no way, she said, but by Christmas she had stuffed it into her carry on to take back! 🙂
That is awesome! Smart girl! I was surprised mine asked me to make one but it was really nice to know that a piece of me went to college!
I love the triangle quilt! I think you could totally leave it the way it is now. And you are a great mom! How sweet to leave your child with chocolate chip cookies and a homemade quilt! That says love to me!
Thanks! I thought later – gee, maybe I should’ve mentioned that my husband did all the heavy lifting to move all the belongings into the dorm room. But then I thought nah…let’s talk about quilts and cookies – haha!
Oooh, all those triangles! Love it!
They’re all in 1″ increments in different sizes but they have to be in the right order to get the length of each column to come out the same as the other columns. It wasn’t difficult but did mean I needed to concentrate while I was placing them!
I’m loving this triangle quilt! The pattern in the background fabric makes it even more interesting.
I was busy one day and my husband was headed to the store next to the LQS so I asked if he could pop in and buy me “4 yards of mostly white Christmasy fabric”. One of the ladies in the store helped him out, but big props to him for making that background fabric happen!

That is true! Letting it sit there for a while to think on it helps.
The quilt on the bed in your photo sure brightens up the room.
I had to laugh – it’s actually just a flannel sheet I have pinned to the wall, so no bed (which would be logical). But it sure shows the contrast to the Civil War colors in the Splendid Sampler quilt blocks next to it!
I meant the blue, orange, and white one in the last photo.

Wow! I am so impressed with your progress. I love your fabric prints and color choices. It is fun to use different shades of the traditional dark green & red; it makes the quilt so fresh and stylish:)
Thank you! I got it pieced together today but noticed when I finished that I mixed up 2 of the columns so I may need to fix that tomorrow!
