A friend called yesterday to remind me that I had this morning blocked off to sew, sew, and sew some more. Our church sends teams to Kenya twice a year (each person pays their own way) and they have eyeglass and dentist clinics where local residents can get fitted for glasses and any dental repairs needed. They take medicine with them, mosquito nets, etc. Well, apparently the guy in charge said the teenage girls in some villages have no sanitary feminine hygiene products and could we make as many as possible for them to take next month and again in November? These are made of a top and bottom of flannel, with 2 terrycloth pads and a barrier sewn in. Our sewing and cutting crew made quite a few by lunch!
In the meantime, I wanted to make a tote bag for my “secret pal” project at school for April and figured I didn’t really need a pattern since it’s just a basic box pattern with a couple of zippered pockets thrown in. I cut 2 orange pieces to 16×21″, the same for the blue lining and 2 of the stiff Pellon whatchamacallit stuff, 2 pockets at 11×14″, and then I made 2 handles at 1×21″ each. It took me a couple of tries to get the topstitching fixed, but it’s finally done. One of the quilt shops in our area is closing their doors and everything is 30% off so I headed over there and picked up some blending fabric that will fit with a variety of things, such as the Moda Grunge that I used here.
We headed out for dinner at an Italian restaurant near us and that darn server said 2 words that I cannot (or choose not to) resist. Bananas Foster! It’s really not hard to make but it sure is a lot easier to just occasionally get at a restaurant. It’s not shown in the photo here, but just as he was pouring the boiling hot carmelized sauce over the bananas into the bowl that the waiter was holding, the waiter flinched – I thought he was about to drop the bowl with everything in it. I guess Mr. Man With the Flame got a little too close for comfort! It was really good and worth every calorie!

WP switched things up with this particular layout and I’m just now realizing I have missed roughly a GAZILLION comments. Oops! Next up – a friend of mine whose husband passed away asked if I would make her a quilt from his shirts. It was really emotional last time, but I’m also looking forward to being able to do that for her.
The best kind of quilting is for the family of a deceased loved one. They will cherish it forever ❤️❤️
I’m curious about the program to Kenya and what your church is – I was in Kenya in 1977 and wonder what part of the country they go to? So great what is happening for girls there!
Peggy, I copied this from our church’s website. Over the past decade, tens of thousands have come to know Jesus through the clinics. Over thirty LCMS churches have joined what is now known as “Vision for Africa.” Almost a quarter of a million Kenyans have had their sight improved with glasses and hundreds more have had their vision restored through cataract surgery. God continues to provide opportunities for us to restore sight to the blind and we are thankful to be able to serve as His hands and feet in Kenya.
They are going to Migori this time but they go to various remote villages which is coordinated by a team over there who oversees where the need is. Thanks for the comment!
